House Building-Week 4

This is our first, official week of summer, and boy have we been super busy. If we're not on the phone with someone, our phones are ringing off the wall; when we've had company over, we've just silenced them. And, I think our email boxes are the fullest they've ever been. I'm not complaining by any means, this is what building your own house and being the general contractors of your own house is all about. The week has been very productive and we've been able to nail down some official subcontractors.

Highlights of this week include:

-We hired the crew that is going to pour our foundation. This crew is fast, they called us and asked if they could put the form boards down already. See picture below. Next week they'll pour the piers and finish up the trenching work so our plumber can do his job. By Friday, our foundation should be poured.

-We've got our inspection guys lined up to check our foundation crew's work.

-Our plumber will come and on Tuesday of this week and run his pipes through the trenches.

-We hired an electrician this week, and he'll be out on the property on Wednesday doing a small piece of work. His big job comes a little bit later on.

Here's something that I learned this week. Our electrician encouraged us NOT to buy those energy efficient bulbs. You know, the ones that take the spiral shape and last for several years. What the GREEN people don't tell you is that they are made with mercury inside them, so if you are installing or changing a bulb and it slips and shatters all over your floor; you must evacuate your house immediately. Then, you'll need to call the HAZMAT team to your house, and I'm sure there's a nice bill to go along with that visit. There is a slim chance of this happening, but what a pain in the rear if that actually came to fruition. YIKES!

We have those bulbs and one did break. Not fun! We will not be buying them in the future.
