Reaping the Rewards of Teaching

Just two days before being named teacher of the year at my school, I received a sweet text message from one of my former students in Rockwall. Molly asked me if I could come to a presentation she was doing on me about the most influential person in her life. I couldn't say yes quick enough and felt extremely honored that she would choose me.

I taught Molly in the sixth grade at Hartman Elementary and from day one, she was such a blessing to have in my homeroom class. Molly's mom, Sandra, was a second grade teacher at Hartman and taught right next door to me. So, you can probably imagine how emotional the morning was. As each student presented, their person of honor got to sit in a huge throne; I felt like royalty. There were many parents, grandparents, and teachers admired, and there were several common themes among all the presentations, all centered around attributes of Galatians 5:22 (The Fruit of the Spirit).

Molly was one of the last few students to present and as soon as she started the first sentence; we both got choked up. I just placed my hand on the back of her arm telling her that she could do it. She did such a phenomenal job and left me with a precious gift to hold close to my heart forever.

I truly love my job, and while most rewards a teacher receives are intangible; they are the ones that make your heart smile and renew your spirit.

Here's the choked up moment, but we made it through together.

Another one of my former darlings (Lacie Johnson). Her parents own, Popcorn Papa in Dallas and Garland...super yummy popcorn!

Outing to Ruby Tuesday's---Me, Sandra, and Molly. My head of hair seemed to be the only one that caught a HUGE gust of wind.

Molly, me and Karly Matthews (another former sweetheart).
The picture in the upper, left-hand corner has a story of its own to tell. This is a picture of Molly and I at the sixth grade graduation. It took Sandra forever to get a picture of us, because we kept crying and had to take several rain checks. I'm so glad she finally captured one of the both of us that day. Below the picture is what Molly presented me with and encompasses her written paper about me. What a treasure!

A teacher affects an eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.

This brought tears to my eyes. Congratulations! We all know that teachers don't get paid what they are worth, but moments like this are priceless. Congrats on teacher of the year too.
